Introducing Design Packs create designer furniture in your own time

For those interested in taking advantage of The Weld Space’s book a bench scheme, but unsure what to make, how to start or just looking for a bit of inspiration to put your new found skills to use.

We have created Design Packs that provide you with the inspiration, tools and resources needed to create designer furniture in your own time.

Our packs are suitable for those who have completed a course with us, and just looking for something to make or to practice welding and fabrication without the time available to design a piece of furniture from scratch.

What is included in the Design Packs?

All our design packs include the following;

  • Bench hire for the period required

  • Materials required for the project

  • Consumables for basic finishing

  • Instructions on how to build the piece (including techical drawings)

A technician will of course be on hand to offer guidance if you get stuck.

Why would I buy a design pack?

We understand that some people will been keen to design and build their own furniture piece or have projects in mind that require welding. That is why we provide a D-I-Y Bench hire scheme.

Others, now have the skills but not the time to create something new. Our Design packs help provide you with a metal product or object to make. We can provide you with all the resources and inspiration to get welding and making under your own steam. This can then allow you to fit out your space with simple designer metal furniture you have built and finished yourself.

Currently we have two design packs available; one which requires a full day of time and or another which requires a half day of time. We will add to this and will build more complex products as we develop this area.

What do I get for a Full Day Design Pack?

Our full day’s Design pack provides you with the resources and tools that teach you how to build a metal bench. You will use ERW box section and steel rods in this processes. Your have the day in hand and can take advantage of the time by practicing your welding skills with some scrap metal to get up to speed. The product is most suitable for MIG welding.

Once you’ve got your skills up to speed, you can use the technical drawings provided to create a cut list and cut the material down to size using our saw. Then your need to prepare and clean the material. You can start machining each of the parts and using the guidance provided to start assembly of your very own bench.

Make sure your familiar with spot welding items together, then making sure it’s straight and square before you finally weld it all together. Then make sure you weld all metal joinery.

Once welded up, you can use the consumable discs provided to grind down your welds ready for finishing.

The bench design is suitable for the outside environment, if you galvanise or inside environments if you powder coat it We can advise on the best finish and approxmiate for cost so that it last a lifetime.

What do I get for a Half Day Design Pack?

Our half day design pack can be split over two evenings or a half day hire and allows you to create a smaller item which is a stool with metal seat.

This design uses 40 x 40 x 1.5mm ERW box section and steel rods . Your have enough material to have a little bit of a practice and play around with the MIG welders, but then you can create your own cut list from the drawings provided and prepare the material for machining for welding up.

How to I buy a design pack?

BUILD A BENCH - FULL DAY - £99.00

BUILD A STOOL - HALF DAY - £65.00

I want to take advantage of a design pack, but not confident enough?

If you have complete a course with The Weld Space but it might have been a while ago, feel free to ask a technician on hand to get you up to speed with the machines and have a quick run down of different welding techniques. If you want to you can pay for an hours tuition from one of our teachers. This can be split throughout the day so provides you with the advice you need.

What course covers the skills needed to build a bench or stool?

If you haven’t yet completed a course with The Weld Space but like the idea of booking a bench and coming back and even taking advantage of our design packs. We would highly recommend booking a place on the Fundamentals to Metalwork course. This course, looks at MIG Welding specifically as well as the skills needed to create cut lists from drawings / sketches. On the Fundamentals to metalwork course we will look at fabrication skills - the skills needed to construct 3D objects from Metal and apply these skills to make a Plant Stand from metal tube.

All the skills gained in this day long welding course are very applicable to the design of the bench or stool and should put you in a good place to get going.

*If you have completed other courses they also provide you with the welding skills suitable for building these items.

Our Fundamentals to Metalwork course is £120.00 pp and runs every few weeks.

Check it out online for more information.

I’ve learnt TIG Welding, can I still use this welding process to construct the bench or stool?

TIG Welding is just as suitable for both of our designs compared to the other Welding Processes. The additional time to spent preparing and cleaning the material for TIG Welding will be off-set by the lesser time you spend grinding and cleaning up welds. Are designs are currently made using Thin ERW box section so the TIG Welding processes is very suitable for this type of material. Make sure you are familiar with the fabrication skills required to build this piece as they will be required.

If you want to learn about All the main Welding Processes including TIG Welding and understand more information about fabrication skills to make furniture. Why not check out our Welding Weekend Course which runs quarterly over two days.

What If i don’t finish my piece in the allocated time?

The simple design and easy nature of the material used to machine means you should have more than enough time in the day providing you get going. However, we’ve been there - trust us. Sometime things don’t go to plan. Our Technician will be on hand to help you. If you can’t completed in time you have available you are welcome to come back and hire a bench for as long as you think it might take.

I would like more time to build my furniture?

You are welcome to book a bench for the additional time if you would like to complete the project over a lesser time. This can be sorted out on the day of arrival.

I want to take advantage of these design packs but I am not available in the weekday?

Currently book a bench scheme is only available in the week or evening for a half day design pack. However, The Weld Space is keen to get people welding and making sometimes can be flexible with dates. Currently the Course programme takes up a lot the workshops time on the weekends leaving little time available. If in doubt please just contact us.

These design packs are really just a starting point, but hopefully they can give you inspiration on how furniture can be simply designed and built.  We look forward to seeing what you can create.

See you soon
